Cakes for the wonderfully strange

At Buttercream & Lightning, imagination takes the lead. Cakes become stories, little worlds, strange ideas and edible works of art.

Perhaps you are looking for a fantasy birthday cake inspired by a favourite story, game or imaginary world. Perhaps you have always dreamed of a grand vintage birthday cake, an elegant baroque cake covered in intricate piping, or a wonderfully dramatic gothic birthday cake with deep colours, dark details and a touch of mystery.

Some cakes begin with a story. Others begin with a colour, a flavour, a character or a wonderfully strange idea. A woodland cottage might become a cake. A favourite board game might inspire an entire edible world. A birthday cake might become a little piece of folklore, a fairytale, a forgotten mansion or something that seems to have wandered in from another realm.

Alongside gothic cakes, vintage cakes and elegant celebration cakes, the atelier creates whimsical and colourful designs filled with joy, nostalgia and a little bit of magic. There are bespoke birthday cakes for ideas that don't fit neatly into a collection, as well as seasonal cakes and themed creations that appear throughout the year.

Fantasy, folklore, myths, fairytales, board games and stories all have a place here. So do handcrafted sweet treats, chocolate creations and seasonal treats, each made with the same love of detail and imagination.

Based in Roermond, Limburg, The Netherlands, Buttercream & Lightning creates cakes and sweet treats for birthdays, celebrations and curious occasions — from bespoke fantasy cakes and custom celebration cakes to dark romantic creations and wonderfully unusual treats.

Bring an idea, a story, a favourite world or simply a little bit of imagination. The atelier will take it from there.
